Distractions Beat the Best of Us
Two weekends ago, my son’s lacrosse team that I coach, was playing in the hail. At first the boys on the team we’re all excited for the haill. They were jumping around and whooping and hollering. Playing in hail was a new experience for them and it completely distracted them. The defense, which seemed particularly excited for the rare weather event, allowed 2 quick goals. This is one of the best defenses in the league. They have allowed the fewest goals for any team and held the top scoring team to a mere 6 goals. But during a hailstorm they allowed 2 goals in about 5 minutes.
You see, often times, new experiences seem exciting and fresh to us, but it distracts us from doing our job well. Sometimes it might be a hail storm, sometimes it might be the nice weather outside. Many times it’s a new book that we read, a video that we’ve watched or an idea that somebody has shared with us. Can you think of where this has happened in your life?
The key to staying on track is making sure that you are clear on your vision and that you have written out your goals and your ongoing strategy to achieve those goals. That way when you get distracted, you can refer to your plan and know exactly where you need to focus in order to get back on track.
Distractions are going to happen.
Having a plan and somebody to help you become aware that you “off your game” will get you moving forward in the right direction.
Oh and in case you were wondering, the defense quickly pulled it together. The game was called due to weather. It was a tie. 2-2.
(Update: We finished the game this past weekend. Even though the weather was an ongoing threat, we got the game in. The boys won, 8-3. The defense found it’s focus and held them to only 1 more goal.)
