Expert Marketing Tactics for Small Business
The old ways of marketing where you place an ad, attract consumers and easily make sales are over. Today, marketing is all about, as Seth Godin says, “attraction and connections.” But, what tactics create the “attraction and connections” that get the results that you want ?
The ideas below I’ve shared with hundreds of clients and followers that have heard me speak on this similar topic of Expert Positioning and Becoming a Local Expert. I share these ideas here for you, so that you can begin to generate better leads with less effort.
Create Responsive Websites
This is almost a beginner’s tip at this point, but just in case you have been around awhile and haven’t made the move, it’s time. In fact it’s way past time. Your website needs to be mobile and it needs to be mobile now. People are using mobile technology more than they are using PCs today to access online information. With so many website options out there, be sure your website looks good on mobile devices as well as on a variety of PC’s. If you are not sure, ask your network who they recommend to help you.
Social Media Action
Can you imagine attending a trade-show or networking event, but not talking to a single attendee? Similarly, it’s not enough to merely join social media. Start by completely filling out your profiles; ensure that they represent your business and your brand in a cohesive manner. Then, take action on social media by sharing your content, other people’s content, and participating in discussions on social media. If all you do is share your own things on social media, no one is going to even notice you. Participation is key. Think of social media as virtual networking. Yes it takes time and intention, but is exceptionally valuable when done right.
Go to and Host Online and Live Events
Not only should you participate in online events such as Google On Air Hangouts, other webinars and tele-summits, as well as live events, you should also plan and host them. Having online and live events is a great way to personify yourself to your audience. Until they hear you or see you live, you might just be an avatar on the computer screen. Once you do show yourself, your business will explode. This strategy is essential to positioning yourself as a credible expert and when done correctly, has big payoffs.
Become an Author
We are all programmed that a book author is an expert. It is difficult to get an interview and be seen as an expert without being an author. Authoring a book today is a great way to create a calling card for your business. The barriers to entry are lower than ever, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that being an author of a book within your niche is a great way to market your core business. Write or ghostwrite a book of interest to your audience, edit it well, have a professional cover made, and sell it on Kindle. You can even use a print on demand service if you want to have print versions available for signing at events.
Get Listed on a Speakers Bureau
Speaking at events within your community and across the country is an excellent way to market your business. Create a “one sheet” (look that up) and send it to various speakers bureaus for groups and organizations where you think your audience will attend. You can even charge for your speeches, creating an additional stream of revenue all while marketing your core business.
Create Special Landing Pages
You probably write guest blog posts, articles, and contribute content to numerous online and offline sources. If you don’t, you should be. But if you do, be sure to create a special landing page for each separate venue. When the audience clicks through they will feel super special and be more likely to trust you enough to act on your calls to action.
Finally, it’s important that you use a variety of different forms of content on your blog and/or website. Don’t just use text – use video, podcasts, audio and more to give your audience a lot of ways to consume your content. Try these advanced marketing tactics starting today, and within 90 days you’ll see a huge difference in your marketing results.

My developer is trying to convince me to move to .net from PHP.
I have always disliked the idea because of the costs.
But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using Movable-type on a number of
websites for about a year and am anxious about switching to another platform.
I have heard great things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress content into it?
Any help would be really appreciated!
coachsean says
Couple, Thanks for the question. I am afraid I am no help with this question. I have never used blogengine. I host this site on WordPress and highly recommend WordPress for small businesses. It is a great platform and has great SEO advantages for business owners. If you have direct questions, feel free to contact me and I will give you my web guys info over at Copper Leaf Creative.

First off I would like to say awesome blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you do not
mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your
mind before writing. I’ve had a difficult time clearing my mind in getting
my ideas out. I do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be lost just
trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or tips?
Appreciate it!

Free Live Shows, great question. A little off topic of Expert Marketing, but I truly understand that sometimes our minds wander off topic. To answer your blog/ business related question, I start with a list of topics that are pertinent to my audience or reader. This helps me make sure that my marketing message stays on point.
Next I use time blocking. I have time set aside with a deadline of when I write. The deadline helps me keep it brief. I have a habit of trying to put in too much content. Some days I just freely write and then I go back and edit and chop up the content.
Last I love starting with an outline. I know, so English class of me, right? But it helps me flush out the main ideas.
Hope that helps.

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but other than that, this is wonderful blog. An excellent read. I’ll definitely be back.
