What type of patterns are they breaking?
A lack of confidence
Clients I work with tend to be new to their respective business (usually 1-3 years). They have somehow determined that they are not experts in their field even though they have the knowledge to support that they are. They have allowed their business mindset to affect their success. Since they don’t see themselves as an expert, they tend to doubt themselves and their skills. Which leads to a lack of confidence, and no one wants to buy from an insecure salesperson.
It’s a vicious cycle as they continue doubting themselves, then their product or service, then they just stop selling completely.
A client I worked with went into shutdown and overwhelm and kept herself so busy doing the menial tasks that she didn’t have time to actually sell or present her product. Her solution was that she needed to hire an office assistant to handle the smaller tasks so she could bring in more money. That didn’t work out so well, as she wound up hiring someone that did not fit with her at all. She began feeling stressed and on the edge even when she was at home. She came to me because her daughter said that she was a ‘mean mommy,’ and she knew she was taking her work home with her. Ugh, that hits right in my gut.
We worked together in identifying what was causing the lack of confidence and then began challenging that BS story.
You see, our patterns are created from BS stories we tell ourselves (hence the BS detecting). These stories were created in a split second in our childhood and have continued throughout our teenage and adult years and now they just don’t serve us anymore.
Once we found the cause, and she had the skills to overcome this challenge she grabbed the bull by the horns and catapulted herself forward. She let go of her assistant, got back in touch with her why, and found the joy in both the menial tasks AND standing up as an expert. Now, she’s home when her daughter gets back from school, and they spend time together.
Fear of rejection
I had another client that came to me because he was so afraid of getting a ‘no’ that he wouldn’t even make an offer. He’d deliver the presentation and do a good job, and then would stop just before making the offer. His feelings of wanting to hide and anxiety got the best of him when he needed to speak in public or when introducing himself at a networking event (his hands would shake). He had gotten to the point where he stopped making presentations altogether.
The fear of rejection is tricky as it uses other fears to hide its existence. Fears like: being seen in a critical way; being anxious about being cut off, demeaned or isolated; being alone; or the fear of change. These fears stop clients in their tracks.
My client and I sat down and discovered what was really holding him back and where that pattern started. Once we had this discovery I supported him through an NLP technique to break that pattern.
Now, that he is free from his fear of rejection he has jumped to the Top 100 in his company (previously he was 824); he makes his presentations AND makes the ask; he comes from a place of not taking anything personally and he savours the ‘no.’
Fear of Selling
Selling is a critical part of a business’ success. Yet, there’s the thought of pushing your products or services onto someone that stirs up fear for many small business owners. The fear of rejection, failure, or overselling can make you feel like a pushy, used car salesman. Yuck!
These fears cause even the simplest task to become insurmountable, so much so that it seems like a better option to do nothing at all. Tasks such as: following up with customers or clients; making phone calls (whether they’re cold calls or not); answering a complaint email; and having the difficult conversations.
I work with my clients to support them in selling from a place of being helpful, from a place of offering a tool that their customer or client can use, and being okay with a ‘no.’ This creates freedom for clients to create their own style and attract their Ideal Client easily and effortlessly. They stop the constant need to push their client or customer into a sale.
